Lee Ann's plans to return home for the surprise celebration of the birth of her firstborn son with her beloved guardian aunt and uncle take a dramatic turn when he is diagnosed with a congenital condition. Then the unthinkable happens, and her seemingly pristine world is turned upside down. Two of her friends from her childhood years, Wesley Brown, now a deputy sheriff, and Ron Banks, a prominent lawyer, resurface to help her through the most devastating time of her life. The journey of revelation begins for the small tight-knit community, uncovering secrets between them that had been buried for generations.

As a coping mechanism for the intolerable grief that was now her constant companion, Lee Ann accepts the position of art teacher at the newly developed nonprofit center. It is here that she learns the true definitions of unconditional and tough love for the seemingly forgotten children of an otherwise profitable society.

Between sessions of grief counseling and therapeutic nature trips, Lee Ann and Wesley stumble upon a drug deal in the making and catch a glimpse of a little girl they believe is Amy, depicted on a billboard and signs all over town as missing and likely being held for ransom. With no thoughts of their own personal safety, Lee Ann partners with Deputy Brown to rescue little Amy, believing the kidnappers are in the process of carting her off to some undisclosed location with the possibility of never seeing the little girl alive again.
