India-Pakistan relations

The primary purpose of studying the impact of nuclear weapons on India-Pakistan relations is to understand the long history of wars and conflicts between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region from 1947 to the present day. The risk of nuclear war between the two countries has increased, particularly after they both joined the nuclear club in May 1998. With both countries continuing their accelerated nuclear arms race alongside the development of conventional military capabilities, the risk of nuclear war in South Asia has become greater than ever. The United Nations has repeatedly attempted to mediate between the two countries, but to date, this has proven ineffective. The world today is experiencing a dangerous global chaos resulting from the increasing number of nuclear-armed states and the ineffectiveness of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, including the system for monitoring and inspecting nuclear facilities worldwide. Any state capable of acquiring such weapons spares no effort in investing its resources to build a nuclear technological base to achieve its objectives, regardless of its precarious economic situation. The most recent development in Indian-Pakistani relations today is the decision by the Indian Parliament in August 2019 to revoke the special status and autonomy of the Kashmir region and to abolish Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which pertains to ending autonomy. This makes the possibility of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan greater than before, given the presence of two neighboring nuclear states.
