Mark Twain was one of the most experienced travelers of his generation and also a gifted and prolific travel writer. His journeys across the Americas, Europe, and the Atlantic are captured not just by his own various writings, but also through cartoons depicting his traveler's life. Twain's reputation among middle- and working-class book buyers was shaped more by cartoonists than by critics. This book collects late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century cartoons and caricatures featuring Twain on trips, forming a type of visual reception history that will entertain and inform Twain students, scholars and instructors as well as general readers. Covered here are Twain's travelogues (The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It, Life on the Mississippi, A Tramp Abroad, and Following the Equator); his years living abroad; lecture tours, including his tour around the world in 1895-96; his late anti-imperialistic essays (e.g., "e;To the Person Sitting in Darkness,"e; "e;To My Missionary Critics,"e; "e;A Defence of General Funston,"e; and "e;The War Prayer"e;); and his receipt of an honorary degree from Oxford University in 1907.
