Parade, also known as "e;autumn exercise"e; and "e;big exercise"e;, means modern military exercises. Peng Hechao's New Army Parade--A Study on the Early Forms of Military Exercises in Modern China akes the New Army Parade as the research object, but is not limited to the case studies of the four parades in Hejian, Zhangde, Taihu, and Yongping. Instead, it is placed in the process of China's modern military transformation for inspection and evaluation. The whole book makes full use of historical materials such as archives, anthologies, diaries, notes, newspapers and periodicals, especially excavating ancient books about the Japanese historical materials collected by the library and archives of the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Peking University Library, the National Library of China and the "e;Asian Historical Data Center"e;. It not only outlines the development context of modern Chinese military exercises from a macro perspective, but also reveals three early military exercises from a micro perspective, including reviewing parade, training parade, and autumn general exercise, and then evaluated the effectiveness, problems and institutional impact of the new army parade. This book will not only help expand the current research horizons of the New Army, and further expand and deepen the research on military reforms during the New Deal period of the late Qing Dynasty; it can also make up for the lack of research on the early history of modern Chinese military exercises by academic circles in the past, and enrich the research of modern Chinese military history from one aspect.
