In schools today many students struggle with reading, and as many teachers and parents attest, students' failure to read may impose a long-term consequence on the development of children's self-confidence and motivation to learn, as well as their later school performance, while there are no easy or easy answers. Quick Fixes for Improved Reading Achievement There is now an extensive knowledge base that shows us the skills children must learn in order to read well. These skills provide the foundation for making sound curricular and educational decisions that can help prevent the consequences of early reading failure. The National Reading Expert Committee issued a report in 2000 that responded to a congressional mandate to help parents, teachers, and policymakers identify key skills and methods for achieving reading. The committee reviewed research in reading instruction with a focus on the critical years from kindergarten through third grade. And identify methods related to continued success in reading. The committee reviewed more than 100,000 studies, and through a carefully developed examination procedure, the members of the research team met several important criteria that the book addresses in analysis and commentary.
