After the expulsion of Muslims from Andalusia, European countries successively sent travelers to the East to explore its trade routes, investigate its political and social conditions, and learn about Islam, as a prelude to the colonial movement. These travelers, most of whom were graduates of theological or military schools, wrote books recounting their journeys in a way that blended fact and fiction, portraying the inhabitants as a savage, sexually corrupt, and less cultured and civilized people. This book concludes that Western travel literature was founded on racist, colonial, crusading principles aimed at manipulating Western public opinion to achieve goals far removed from the interests of the region and its people.
