This practice method is performed for the subjugation of enemies, protection from calamities, and fostering mutual respect and affection. Yakṣas are traditionally described as violent demons that harm or devour humans; in Esoteric Buddhism, however, they are revered as beings that consume the negative karma and defilements of sentient beings. While they are generally regarded as evil forces that should be destroyed, Esoteric Buddhism takes a positive view, believing that if their powerful energy is redirected, it can become a force for attaining enlightenment.
This practice is said to be the most secret of the five wrathful deity practices and must not be transmitted to those under the age of 40. However, it is said that this restriction does not apply to exceptional individuals who have completed the transmission of Hisho (秘抄) and received the Yugi Abhiṣeka, as in the Sambo-in Ryu. Furthermore, this practice is transmitted exclusively by the Shingon School and has not been transmitted to the Tendai School.
