When Jacy was about to turn eighteen, her father was attacked by the Van Stein dynasty. Stealing two of the elder gemstones, Jacy exiles with her little sister, Adsile, and her mother. After a few years, they all feel everything is calm, but the Van Stein dynasty attacks again. Killing the third elder gemstone protector, the Van Stein dynast captures the third newer protector, Adsile, and runs off to Athens, Ohio with her.

Jacy goes on a journey to save her sister, and to protect all charms. Joined by her soulmate, they travel through treacherous blizzards and meet other creatures to help them to Athens, Ohio. Getting to Athens, they plan for a battle to save the two final new protectors.

It was a dream as a child to be told they were chosen to be a protector, but when they turned eighteen, they dreaded the real truth behind the charms.
