RISE Ninth Grade Resilience Curriculum
Purpose & Direction - The Emerging Navigator

High school changes the landscape. New expectations. New relationships. Greater independence. More pressure. More choices-and choices that increasingly shape what comes next.

RISE: Purpose & Direction - The Emerging Navigator helps ninth-grade students learn how to navigate that new world with greater self-awareness, resilience, confidence, and intention.

Students are not expected to have their future figured out. Instead, they learn something more useful: how to understand where they are, determine what matters, make stronger choices, recover when things do not go as planned, and keep moving toward the person they want to become.

Built around the RISE developmental framework, this 36-week Grade 9 curriculum includes 180 daily learning experiences that transform social-emotional learning into practical human-performance skills students can use in school, relationships, digital life, decision-making, and future planning.

Throughout six developmental units, students learn to:

• Set Their North - explore purpose, identity, values, belonging, and personal direction
• Build the Route - strengthen priorities, time management, attention, habits, and systems
• Navigate People & Pressure - manage emotion, peer influence, boundaries, conflict, and support
• Choose What Compounds - understand trade-offs, reputation, digital choices, risk, and consequences
• Recover Without Losing Direction - use setbacks, feedback, stress, accountability, and resilience to grow
• Claim the Next Horizon - build goals, self-advocacy, skills, opportunity awareness, and future readiness

Students repeatedly practice the Grade 9 RISE performance engine:

ORIENT → PRIORITIZE → COMMIT → MONITOR → ADJUST → PERSIST

Rather than simply telling students to "be resilient," RISE gives them structured opportunities to analyze situations, test strategies, make decisions, reflect on evidence, defend their reasoning, and apply what they learn to real life.

The curriculum includes:

• 36 weeks of developmentally sequenced resilience instruction
• 180 daily learning experiences
• Student Labs and reflection activities
• Real-world scenarios and decision challenges
• Five-day teacher implementation plans
• CASEL competency integration
• Grade 9 English Language Arts skill connections
• Goal-setting, self-advocacy, decision-making, and future-readiness activities
• A culminating Purpose & Direction Blueprint that helps students create their next 90-day route

RISE treats resilience as more than recovering from difficulty. It is the ability to remain thoughtful, adaptive, responsible, and purposeful when life becomes uncertain.

Grade 9 is where students begin moving from simply reacting to high school toward actively navigating it.

They do not need to know exactly where life will take them.

They need the skills to recognize the next better direction.
