This is a quick read.

It tackles subjects which are rarely mentioned when you evaluate Cuban history.
It chronicles Fred's seven year journey to explore and understand racism in Cuba. It also explores why and how the Negro Leagues found a safe haven and how their play benefited Cuban baseball players.

During his journey to ten provinces it includes anecdotal interviews and discussion from Cubans. Race is a difficult topic to discuss, nevertheless some were more willing to share their experiences. For some you could feel their pain as they see others with the same skills, yet lighter skin tones offered better opportunities. Like most, they have come to understand racism is institutionalized and unlikely to change, at least within their lifetime.

As for the Negro Leagues, they found a haven in Cuba. Interestingly, this was during pre-Revolution or before Fidel Castro came to power. Despite social conditions which eventually led to the uprising, Negro League players were able to make solid contributions as the legacy of Cuban baseball was being created.
