In the Pacific his destroyer survived both a typhoon and a Japanese kamikaze aircraft attack. While a midshipman, Shulman had been introduced by his parents to Jewish leader David Ben-Gurion. After the war, as a civilian, Shulman helped Israel's "clandestine" sealift of Jewish refugees from Europe to Palestine.
