WHEN THE GROUND BENEATH MIGHT CRUMBLE...

Germany's insidious scheme draws the United States into the Great War. Peril and unease hover as Americans enlist and volunteer for the cause. But it's the lurking risk on the home front that threatens to shatter lives.

April 1917. President Wilson reneges on his campaign promise when the United States declares war on Germany. A military draft soon follows, and tension falls over the small German-settled Minnesota town of Holmesburg.

In this coming-of-age family saga, seventeen-year-old Melania Harvey happily moves to Minneapolis with her parents when they secure employment at a large flour mill-the location distancing her from the unwanted attention of the charming Jim Wirth. She plans to attend college soon and vows that neither the war nor a man will derail her goals. 

After Congress enacts the Espionage Act, it's not long before Minnesota's ultra-nationalist efforts to root out the enemy press in from all sides, especially for those of German heritage. Melania and her family focus on doing their part for the war-working hard at the mill that supplies flour to the soldiers abroad, volunteering with the Red Cross, planting a Victory garden, and buying war bonds. But when Jim Wirth goes missing, they realize no one is safe, and Melania is forced to reconsider her feelings for Jim.

As 1918 brings the war to a close, a new and even more vicious enemy emerges: Spanish Influenza.

In a battle of life and death, clinging to what they hold dear may be their only hope.
