As a new graduate with a degree in criminal justice, Del Gage accepts his dream job in a peaceful rural town where he spent many happy summers with his aunt and uncle.
The peace is shattered on the first day of Del's new job when he and Sheriff Ephram Botts are plunged into the investigation of the murder of two young boys. In the weeks that follow another body is discovered and one of the townspeople is missing.
Soon the community begins to see links to a past unsolved murder, and the investigation is complicated by rumors about a mysterious mountain woman. The case builds to a fast-paced conclusion and spirals to an unexpected ending as the past is echoed in the present.
Three years later, just as the town is beginning to recover from its tragedies, Del and Ephram find themselves immersed in another murder involving the same family which has connections that spread from Bald River to locations throughout the South. The ties to the past tighten once again as Del finds himself fighting for his life.
