A three-year-old girl disappears into the forests of Cape Breton.
When her body is found, there is no mystery about what killed her.
A black bear.
Two weeks later, a German couple hiking in the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands are found dead. The injuries point to another bear attack, and fear spreads quickly along the Cabot Trail. Parks officials hunt the animal responsible, tourists begin cancelling trips, and another black bear is killed.
Then someone else is attacked.
After the bear is already dead.
RCMP detective Claire MacLeod begins to question an explanation everyone desperately wants to believe. Working alongside conservation officer Jonah Bernard and respected wildlife veterinarian Dr Adrian Reid, she discovers that the victims may be connected by something far older than the recent attacks: a failed wilderness development, a disputed environmental report and the death of a surveyor fourteen years earlier.
As the investigation pushes deeper into Cape Breton's mountains, isolated trails and forgotten roads, another disturbing possibility emerges.
Perhaps they aren't hunting the wrong bear.
Perhaps they shouldn't be hunting a bear at all.
**Bear on the Cabot Trail** is an atmospheric wilderness crime thriller about buried secrets, human fear and the terrifying danger of believing the most convenient explanation.
