Scientifically referred to as Betta splendens, betta fish are among the most widely kept freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Southeast Asia's shallow waterways, particularly those of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, are where they first appeared. Originally developed for their vivid colors and violent temperament, they were used in fish combat, a traditional Thai sport called "Ikan Laga." This is a centuries-old custom that has its origins in gaming and leisure. The combatants gave rise to the beautiful variety we see today because they were carefully bred for resilience, beauty, and fighting capability.
