Beyond the Borders: My Journey of Resilience, Courage, and Growth is the inspiring memoir of Orbert Carlinos Mbandama, whose life journey spans rural Zambia, Southern Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. It is a story of resilience, migration, and the pursuit of knowledge, told through vivid personal narrative and enriched with cultural traditions.
Born in Mazabuka, Zambia, Orbert's childhood was shaped by family warmth, community life, and the early spark of education. His formative years in Sinazongwe, on the shores of Lake Kariba, exposed him to both the beauty of nature and the turbulence of political conflict, as Rhodesian forces clashed with Zambian soldiers nearby. These experiences instilled resilience and a deep appreciation for culture, as Tonga songs, ceremonies, and storytelling sustained hope amidst uncertainty.
At Hillcrest Secondary Technical School, Orbert confronted the challenges of boarding life, socio-economic differences, and the rigors of Zambia's education system in the 1980s. His determination carried him into teaching, where he inspired young minds while simultaneously pursuing the London GCE examinations. His academic triumphs led him to NRDC, but his path took a dramatic turn when he joined the Zambia Police Service. Rigorous training and service tested his endurance and reshaped his worldview, even as personal setbacks demanded resilience.
Seeking new horizons, Orbert moved abroad. In Botswana, he taught in Mochudi, immersing himself in Tswana traditions and community life. Later, in New Zealand, he worked on dairy farms, pursued higher education, and embraced Māori culture, finding parallels with his African heritage. Sixteen years in New Zealand brought both growth and hardship, including a marriage breakdown, but also academic success and professional evolution.
His journey culminated in Sydney, Australia, where he transitioned into banking, blending his agricultural roots with financial expertise. Here, he met his wife, and together they celebrated their union across three weddings in Australia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-symbolizing the blending of cultures and resilience of love.
The memoir closes with reflections on gratitude, faith, and legacy. Orbert's story is not only about personal triumph but also about the universality of resilience. It is a reminder that courage and perseverance can carry us beyond the borders of our beginnings, and that love and gratitude are the forces that sustain us through life's trials.
