Beyond the Tapes

Four seasons of Oxford Speedway. Four seasons of standing trackside with a camera, waiting for that split second when everything comes together.

What began as a collection of photographs has grown into a record of some very special memories at Sandy Lane. Over the past four seasons, I have watched riders battle for every point, witnessed spectacular passes, celebrated victories and captured more than a few spills along the way.

Speedway is a sport that rewards patience behind the camera. The action happens incredibly quickly, and there is often only one chance to capture the moment. A rider throwing the bike into the bend, two competitors racing inches apart, shale flying from the back wheel or a rider celebrating after taking the chequered flag can all be over in an instant.

Every photograph in this book has its own story. Some bring back the memory of a particular race, while others remind me of a particular evening, a rider or simply the atmosphere of being at Sandy Lane. Looking back through four seasons of photographs has been a reminder of just how many moments speedway can produce. Some were dramatic, some unexpected and some simply enjoyable to be there and witness; also some to forget but nevertheless still a memory.
