Beyond the Walls provides a comprehensive, step-by-step framework based on Nehemiah's model for mobilizing churches to create genuine community transformation through strategic outreach, moving beyond quick-fix programs to sustainable partnerships that address real needs. This two-book series is organized around six steps drawn from the book of Nehemiah, which provides a beautiful picture of mobilizing God's people to accomplish significant community transformation:

Book 1: Building Your Foundation (this book) focuses on the essential internal work that must happen BEFORE you launch major community partnerships. You'll learn to pray strategically, build leadership teams, assess your community accurately, discover your congregation's assets, develop a clear ministry strategy, and recruit the leaders who will make it all happen. This is the preparation and infrastructure phase-and it's non-negotiable.

Building Your Foundation (book 1) includes:

Step 1: PRAY (Book 1, Chapter 1)

Before Nehemiah took any action, he spent four months in prayer and fasting. Prayer isn't just the preliminary step-it's the ongoing foundation that sustains everything else. Effective community outreach must be birthed in prayer, bathed in prayer, and sustained through prayer.

Step 2: BUILD YOUR LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION (Book 1, Chapter 2)

Nehemiah didn't work alone-he enlisted advisors and built a leadership team. You cannot do community outreach in isolation. You need a community outreach team for support and accountability, you need wise advisors who bring perspective, and you need a champion leader (staff or volunteer) who will drive the vision forward.

Step 3: MAKE AN ACTION PLAN (Book 1, Chapters 3-6)

Nehemiah assessed the situation thoroughly before acting. He inspected the walls at night, gathered information, and developed a clear strategy. Your church needs:
