This book describes the successes, potential and constraints of bioprospecting, especially in view of new, resistant pathogenic microorganisms. Many different ecosystems exist in the planet which contain their own living organisms which have the potential of supplying properties to society such as novel antibiotics, enzymes, food, cosmetics or even aesthetic value. The book describes what these properties are in detail and which organisms can be utilized to obtain them. The organisms include plants, insects, fungi, bacteria and phages. It stresses the difficulties in obtaining successful products and yet describes why these sources are to be valued over other routes to obtain these properties such as synthetic chemistry. Personal experience of bioprospecting projects are given significance. Importantly, issue such as how to share the benefits equitably are described in detail and why pharmaceutical companies can be reluctant to become involved. The legal issues are also discussed.
