The knee of a favorite pair of jeans goes thin weeks before it opens, and by the time anyone notices, the cloth around the hole is already too weak to hold a stitch. Catch it early and a few rows of stitches can reinforce the cloth before the hole ever forms.

There is a drawer of worn shirts, a basket of fabric ends and a tea towel gone sheer at the center, and none of it is quite rubbish. A few of those shirts were the good ones, which is why they are still in the drawer. So it all waits, folded, for a use nobody can name.

Then comes the first repair. The patch puckers, the stitches pull through the weave, or the dark blue leaves its mark on everything pale in the wash. Each failed patch makes the next one feel like a bigger risk.

Twelve Mends and Makes by Hand

  • Patch a worn denim knee with visible mending that holds: a basted patch, a stitched frame, then rows of running stitch through every single layer
  • Reinforce a thinning shirt elbow from the outside without stitching the sleeve shut, then rebuild a frayed cuff with a neatly wrapped binding
  • Mend a tea towel from behind with a backing patch, and give a linen napkin a double-folded hem plus a small patch over its torn corner
  • Sew a coaster set, a needle book, a drawstring pouch and a stuffed pincushion from scraps, each seam closed with the stitch that suits it
  • Why do your stitches pucker? The thread is pulled too tight or the cloth is left unsupported, and each cause has its own fix
  • Build a table runner, a cushion cover and a wall hanging from scrap cloth laid over a foundation and crossed by long, even rows of stitches
  • Test every indigo scrap for crocking before it touches pale cloth, so a blue patch does not stain the linens it was sewn to save

Boro began in the cold north of Japan, where winters were bitter, cotton was scarce and every scrap of used cloth was kept and layered. This book keeps that logic and the Japanese stitching that held it together: repairs that show on the surface, and cloth that earns a second life.

Cloth, Needles and the Running Stitch
  • Which cloths take a needle well? Woven cotton, linen and hemp, judged by hand, and why denim wears pale at the knee
  • Needles, thick cotton thread and a thimble matched to the thickness of the layers you are stitching through
  • Washing cloth before cutting, pulling one thread to find a true line, and sorting scraps into stacks by shade
  • Laundering indigo pieces, drying them out of the sun, storing them flat, and mending a repair again when it wears through

Nothing here needs a sewing machine, a pattern sheet or a template. Measurements are written out in inches and centimeters, so each piece is cut and stitched straight from the page. Every stitch is taught before a project asks for it, so the supplies are on the table before the first cut.

The stitches stay visible on purpose. Wabi sabi, the Japanese appreciation of worn cloth, is the story behind them, and zero waste is the habit, with clothing repair and upcycling clothes turning scraps into something useful.

Whatever worn denim is already in the wardrobe is enough to start.
