Mace Doyle has talked forty-one people back from the edge.

He knows the gorge bridges the way a surgeon knows an anatomy - the specific height, the specific cold, the specific quality of a person's voice when they are standing on the outside of a railing and have run out of reasons to climb back over. He is not a cop, not a therapist. He is a contracted crisis negotiator and former high-angle rope rescue technician who has spent fifteen years working at height with his hands and ten years working the Niagara gorge bridges with his voice. He is exceptionally good at both. He has never lost a subject he reached in time.

He has also, in eleven cases across ten years, quietly altered the presenting condition field in his session logs - changed the documented reason a person came to the bridge - to protect them from mandatory institutional interventions he believed would do more harm than good. Every alteration was an act of professional judgment. Every alteration was also a federal violation. Both of these things are true simultaneously, and Mace has been living in the space between them for a decade without examining it too closely.

Then Garrett Lyle - the fortieth person Mace talked back, a twenty-eight-year-old former electrician's apprentice - finds him six months later and asks a single question: What do you say to yourself when you're standing at the edge?

Mace has no answer. He has talked forty-one people through their answers. He has never been asked for his own.

What follows is not a support group. It has no name, no meeting schedule, no organizational structure. It is simply the people Mace reached - some of them - finding each other through the specific gravity of shared experience, and gathering around the only man they all have in common. And as the gathering grows, and as a psychologist named Dana Reyes puts the altered session files on the table, Mace begins to understand that the presenting conditions he protected those eleven people from reporting are not conditions he read about in a training manual.

He felt them himself. On a refinery tower in Sarnia, Ontario, at 2 AM, alone, sixteen years ago. He looked down. What he felt was not fear. He has never told anyone. He built his entire career on top of that moment and called it a vocation.

Brinkmanship is a novel about the specific violence of competence - what it costs a man to be the person other people call when they cannot hold on - and about the question that hides inside every act of rescue: who taught you to find your way back, and what did you do when no one was watching?
