Readers of the Book of Mormon may wonder what experiences a young Moroni must have had to make him such a staunch supporter and lover of liberty. Moroni, His Years is a "coming of age" historical novel which tells the fictional story of a young, over-weight Moroni when he is nine years old. His cousin Lehi is his best friend and Lehi's younger sister, Tirzah has captured his heart. Moroni and Lehi witness Alma the Younger's conversion and the development of the Reign of Judges by King Mosiah.
Lehi and Moroni leave home when they are 12 to attend the Gideon school to learn the Torah and train to be soldiers. It is there, the two meet and befriend a strong, athletic boy named Teancum. Upon their return home, they witness the murder of Gideon at the hands of Nehor. This story includes the backdrop of the cunning schemes of Amalickiah to destroy the freedom of the Nephites.
After the third and final year at the Gideon School, they are returning to Zarahemla when they are caught up in the Amlicite rebellion and must fight to survive.
Tirzah and Moroni confess their love for one another.
