The even-shortening product life cycle, and the technological revolutions are placing increasingly heavy demands on the development departments of the industry, resulting in making the technological world more competitive. These trends make the technological sectors in the industry, more open to cooperation. In some sectors, a single firm cannot sustain the competitive advantage for very long in the highly competitive industry sections without heavy investment in R&D. Such heavy investment taxes the annual turnover of the firms and attempts are always made to reduce it. One of the simplest ways is to share the burden of R&D between firms. The main problem in R&D cooperation between firms is that, if the firms are technologically close enough to cooperate, they are probably also close enough to be competitors!.
