"Comus" is a celebrated masque by John Milton, first presented in the mid-17th century. This dramatic work explores the eternal struggle between virtue and the allure of hedonistic temptation through a blend of lyrical poetry and moral allegory. The narrative follows a young Lady who becomes separated from her brothers in a dark forest, where she encounters the eponymous enchanter, Comus, the son of Bacchus and Circe. Comus attempts to ensnare her using his magical powers and persuasive rhetoric, representing the dangers of unrestrained desire and the subversion of the natural order.

The Lady, however, remains steadfast in her commitment to temperance and chastity, resisting the enchanter's decoys until she is eventually rescued through the intervention of her brothers and a guardian spirit. This work, featuring scholarly contributions by A.W. Verity, highlights Milton's early mastery of poetic form and his deep preoccupation with the nature of the soul and moral integrity. "Comus" remains a cornerstone of English literature, valued for its rhythmic beauty, its rich mythological allusions, and its sophisticated defense of a virtuous life against the forces of corruption.
