Cultures Colliding, Vol. 2: Searching for a Way Out

West Sacramento, the early 1990s. Kao Saeteurn is three years out of a refugee camp on the Thai border when a black Firebird pulls up outside his mother's house and empties a magazine at him. He survives it with a jammed pistol, a friend's.44, and a bullet lodged under the skin of his foot. He refuses the hospital and cuts it out himself, because a hospital means police, and police mean his mother finds out.

That decision sets the pattern for everything that follows. Kao sells crack, carries a pager, and earns his place among older men who call him little brother, inside an apartment complex ruled by a man everyone knows as the king. The Mien families around him keep their doors shut and their curtains drawn. They came here to escape a war and found another one.

Then he meets Katherine, a white girl from a part of the city he did not know existed, ten minutes and a whole world away from the floors he sleeps on. She shows him river streets, a university, a version of his own life he had never been offered. Loving her costs him something with everyone he answers to.

This volume moves from a shooting in a driveway to a body in a dumpster, through jungle memories, hospital rooms, betrayals between blood brothers, and a Bay Area run that goes wrong. Underneath it runs a harder question than survival: whether a boy who was taught that the world only respects violence can put it down and still be someone.
