Every well-run private household eventually discovers the same gap. The people managing the estate, the staff, the calendars, and the finances are excellent at what they do, and none of it was built with a painting, a bronze, or a cabinet of silver in mind. Fine art and valuable objects follow a different logic: they need documentation before they need decoration, insurance before they need admiration, and a succession plan before anyone wants to think about one.

The literature that already exists doesn't quite close that gap. Museum registration manuals are written for institutions with boards, charters, and public accountability. Art-collecting guides are written for the buyer, covering acquisition and the market, and largely stop there. Curating the Collection is written to be the working system in between, the one built for a family and the two or three people who work for them.

Structured in twelve parts and forty-nine chapters, this manual follows the life of an object through a private collection: accessioning, valuation and insurance, conservation and environmental care, storage and display, loans and logistics, acquisition and deaccessioning, crisis response, governance and succession, and category-specific handling for everything from works on paper to jewelry, rare books, wine, and mechanical objects. A dedicated part covers the advanced situations that arrive less often but carry outsized consequences: cross-border movement, holding entities and trusts, auction and dealer relationships, multi-property collections, renovation projects, and insurance claims in practice.

Thirty-one registers are included, real, worked templates ready to use immediately: accession records, condition reports, provenance and title registers, insurance trackers, conservation logs, loan agreements, emergency response plans, family governance charters, succession registers, and more. Three appendices follow one object through the full system end to end, map every situation to the right register, and lay out a practical 90-day implementation sequence.

A companion volume to Running the Private Office and The Private Estate Operations Compendium, Curating the Collection is written for the same reader: the family office, the estate manager, the registrar or collection manager, and the principal who wants the collection run with the same rigor as everything else the household has already learned to run well.
