In the autumn of 1889, a quiet farmhouse in Clarendon Township, Pontiac County, Quebec, became the centre of one of Canada's most unsettling and unusual paranormal cases.

George and Susan Dagg's rural home was no ancient castle, no ruin, and no theatrical haunted mansion. It was an ordinary working farmhouse near Shawville, surrounded by fields, neighbours, family ties, and the strict expectations of nineteenth-century rural life. Then the disturbances began. Fires were said to break out in daylight. Stones entered through windows. Household objects moved without visible hands. A mouth organ was reported to play by itself. Most disturbing of all, a deep, unseen voice spoke from within and around the house, answering questions and drawing the attention of neighbours, clergy, journalists, and curious visitors.

At the centre of the case stood Dinah Burden McLean, an eleven-year-old Scottish Home Child living with the Dagg family. Dagg's Demon reconstructs the 1889 Clarendon Poltergeist through a careful nonfiction lens, examining the signed witness statement, the newspaper reports, the role of artist Percy Woodcock, the religious and folk beliefs surrounding the case, the accusations against Mrs Wallace, and the strange claims of apparitions seen by children. It also places the haunting within the wider history of Pontiac County, rural Canadian life, and the British Home Children movement.

Was the Dagg case a hoax, a poltergeist outbreak, a psychological disturbance, a social panic, a misunderstood domestic crisis, or something darker?
