Why cooling is the first constraint you hit when demand changes, and how to structure a retrofit program that doesn't gamble the facility.
Almost no data center is cooled today the way it was designed to be cooled on day one. Server refresh cycles push rack density up every 18-36 months, business units add GPU or AI training clusters that were never in the original load model, and the chiller plant that comfortably carried a 4 kW/rack facility is now being asked to carry 15-30 kW/rack pods without a corresponding capital refresh. Cooling retrofits are how existing facilities absorb that drift without a new building.
This guide is written for the engineers, facility managers, and design consultants who inherit that gap - the person who has to make an existing mechanical plant, existing floor layout, and existing CRAH/CRAC fleet do meaningfully more than they were sized for, on a live, occupied floor, without an outage.
