Social trust is the key to, indeed the very success formula for, well-functioning and harmonious societies like the Norwegian one, both researchers and politicians claim. But can there be too much trust in a society? Can trust make us dull and naive? Does Norwegians'' great, almost boundless trust in authorities and state institutions leave the way open for corruption, abuse of power and national security threats - and for us Norwegians to a large extent tolerating incompetence? Yes, claim Nina Witoszek and Eva Joly, who in this book deal with what they call Norwegian trust pathologies. The authors show how the Norwegian trust has backfired on us, and has been abused by, among others, Norwegian peace brokers, tax lawyers, business leaders, politicians and the state oil company Equinor. They recognize that trust is an important social good. But it must be accompanied by common sense.
