"Dirty Spoons" is a collection of somewhat humorous, occasionally poignant poems and illustrations from A.D. Allen's messy desk. These poems explore the banal and examine the everyday through the lens of an inescapably Midwestern mind.
Note from the author - the meaning behind "dirty spoons"
I was once in a cafe in Stockholm, Sweden where they were serving several different kinds of ice cream. Instead of giving samples on the little wooden tongue depressors like you get in the States, they used tiny ornate silver spoons. On the end of the counter, they had a glass with a piece of tape on it - the tape read "dirty spoons".
I thought this was a solid analogy for poetry, especially short poetry. A poem is like an ice cream sample. It's just enough to get a taste, a hint, an idea of the thing. This collection serves as my pile of dirty spoons - worlds, ideas, and thoughts I have had the chance to sample. Now I get to share them with you (after they've been washed, of course).
