This book captures modern paradigms of disease control through social network surveillance applications. It discusses electronic sentinel surveillance and surveillance science via wireless applications. It also brings forward topics that integrate statistical and epidemiologic sciences with surveillance practice. In addition, with the evolution of social networking practices, topics on the challenges for surveillance science and practice are also discussed. This book, will go one step further and provide insights on how do we need to analyse epidemiological trends by following best practices on distinguishing useful information from noise, namely fake news, false reporting of disease incidents and events and others. At the same time, we need to be able to protect the health-focused applications and communication tools via cybersecurity technologies and to make sure that anonymity of reporting and privacy is maintained. Last but not least the book discusses the role and impact of social media in disease surveillance, while also understanding the current role of communities in infectious disease surveillance and control.
