In the last eight years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and the U.S-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq many novels about Muslim countries appeared in the United States book market primarily in response to American readers' interest in learning more about these countries. Some of these works have enjoyed spectacular popularity. This thesis looks closely at two novels, The Kite Runner and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, to examine the relation between the different types of representation of Muslims and the larger political and economic relationship of the West and the Middle East.
