Edward II

Edward II did not lose his crown in a single moment. He lost it in public, step by step, as favourites replaced institutions, faction replaced governance, and the monarchy's credibility collapsed under pressure.

When Edward inherited the throne in 1307, England expected a warrior-king in the image of Edward I. Instead, it received a ruler drawn to intimacy, indulgence, and personal loyalty over hard political discipline. His elevation of Piers Gaveston provoked the nobility into open resistance. His later dependence on the Despensers turned resistance into revolt. As Scotland rose under Robert the Bruce and English authority faltered, Edward's court became a battlefield of grudges, confiscations, and revenge.

This is the story of a reign consumed by mistrust: barons who believed the king was captured by corrupt influence, a queen who became a political rival, and a royal administration that increasingly governed through force rather than consent. Edward was not unintelligent, and he was not idle. But he lacked the judgement and authority required to control a realm that demanded strength, clarity, and restraint.
