Edward Mitchell Bannister

Edward Mitchell Bannister was an accomplished nineteenth-century painter known for seascapes and pastoral landscapes. Born in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Bannister moved to New England as a young man and became involved with the abolitionist movement in Boston. He won first prize at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia for his painting Under the Oaks, making him the first African American/Canadian to win a major American art prize. He was also a founding member of the Rhode Island School of Design. Yet despite this success, he has remained largely unknown in Canada.

Edward Mitchell Bannister: Hidden Blackness is the first Canadian publication about this groundbreaking Black artist and abolitionist. This landmark book features historical images and reproductions of Bannister's paintings - many drawn from the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum - alongside essays that explore his life and work, the historical context for Black people and communities in nineteenth-century New Brunswick, and fascinating recent discoveries regarding his practice of recycling figure paintings into landscapes.
