The story encourages children living with epilepsy to recognise the importance of taking their prescribed medicine, learning about their individual triggers, looking after themselves and telling a trusted adult when something changes. Most importantly, it reinforces that an increase or change in seizure activity should never be hidden or ignored.
Speaking up allows parents, carers and healthcare professionals to review a child's management plan and make sure they continue to receive the support they need.
But this book is not only for children with epilepsy.
It is also for their friends, classmates, siblings, teachers and communities.
Children are naturally curious. When they understand why someone may have a seizure and learn how they can respond safely and kindly, uncertainty can be replaced with knowledge and compassion. A child experiencing a seizure should never be laughed at, frightened, excluded or made to feel different because of something beyond their control.
