The volume examines Reinhold and Georg Forster, Alexander von Humboldt, and Adelbert von Chamisso in their travel experiences as authors and naturalists, as "natives" and "foreigners". The book reconstructs the legacy of their world travels studying ideals and practices of writing, collecting, and sharing, and scrutinizes their function for the genesis of modern science. The study of their travel journals, notebooks, and correspondances, of their collected artifacts and natural objects explores the intellectual scope of the book's protagonists as well as their observations of flora and fauna, of nature and mankind. In doing so, the articles of this book treat the many direct and indirect connections of their works, as well among Forster, Humboldt, and Chamisso, as among other naturalists and travelers.
