Years after a devastating war against the powerful Guardians, the lands of Doko remain scarred by fear. Doomra, an orphan with no memory of his past, has spent his life as an outcast in the village of Paso de Aqua. His only goal is to prove his worth by joining the village guards-a dream that culminates in the Day of the Trial.

But as the Trial begins within the village's sacred temple, the ritual turns into a massacre. Amidst the violence, Doomra hears a mysterious voice and suffers a near-fatal wound. In a vision, he encounters a shadow of his future self; when he wakes, he possesses the very powers the world has come to loathe. Doomra is a Guardian.

Labelled a monster and forced into exile, Doomra must flee the only home he's ever known. Accompanied by Yazendra-the General's daughter and the woman he loves-he sets out for the capital city to find the last of his kind. To survive, they must outrun the Order, a military force dedicated to hunting Guardians, and navigate a wilderness teeming with vicious creatures. Guided by the enigmatic voice in his head, Doomra must discover if his powers are a curse to be broken or a destiny to be embraced.
