Huda Barakat s novels are complex and densely woven texts that focus on the obsessions and inner conflicts of their protagonists. Although they are all set in the Lebanese Civil War (1975 1990), the war functions rather as a kind of blind spot , one that, although not the focus of attention, nevertheless determines the events.§In this book, her first three novels are analysed with regard to the concept of Grenzgänge (border crossings). In the context of the spatial turn , the study develops a concept of border crossings integrating the concepts of heterotopy (Foucault), borderline and transgression, threshold und liminality (Turner) as well as interstices or Third Spaces (Bhabha, Anzaldúa, Soja) and ZwischenWeltenSchreiben (Ette).§Focusing on different aspects in the individual analyses of the three novels chosen androgyny as metaphor, madness between lovesickness and mystical experience, and utopia , this study demonstrates the fruitfulness of the concept for the analysis of literary texts.§
