When Bartonsville bank president, Walter Morgan, fails to keep his weekly hangnail treatment, Candi DeCarlo, a manicurist at the Tips & Toes salon, goes looking for him. She finds him - her biggest tipper - slumped over his desk with a large hunting knife sticking out of his back.
It doesn't help that the town's hunky new Police Chief, Dan Cobb, initially considers Candi a person of interest.
However, when Sylvia Wilson is arrested the next day, Candi swings into action. She can't believe her daughter's former second-grade teacher and the head of the town's Youth Center is the murderer.
Candi joins forces with disabled Army veteran, Johnny Edwards, to find the real killer. But they didn't anticipate receiving threatening notes or being kidnapped at gunpoint.
Hangnails is the debut of a new mystery series featuring Candi DeCarlo and the quirky folks who live in the quaint little town of Bartonsville, Indiana.
