Adla and her husband are the envy of the people in their village in Tanzania. After Adla gives birth to their third child, the villagers keep to themselves unless it is to glare at the baby that they call ghost. Nightmares consume Adla's waking moments and her sleep, as she recalls the mutilated body of a young boy like her baby, not long ago. Witchdoctors and superstitions threaten Adla's baby's pure existence, leaving only her family and dearest friend to trust, until three strangers come to the village to see if the rumors were true about the ghost. Not only is her baby's life at risk, but anyone associated with a ghost. Adla's relationship becomes strained with her husband when a stranger takes a job in the same gold mine as her husband. Miners infer how rich one can get when selling body parts of a ghost and how they can heal AIDS if you have sex with one. Adla rarely lets Zahra out of her sight, especially after the assault at school. Keeping track of a little girl wasn't always easy during the day, but she never expects her daughter to disappear in the middle of the night.
