This book focuses on the question 'What makes a good surgeon?' and in doing so explores 'What might make surgeons better?'. It looks at surgery, uniquely, in three boxes and appeals to all surgeons, trainees, medical students, dentists, podiatrists and really anyone interested in surgeons or surgery. Box 1 is what can be seen and experienced in the operating field- the 'How' of surgery. Exercises at the end encourage the reader to apply learning to their own surgery. The first box also explores the utility of simulators drawing comparison with the airline industry. Finally, comparison is made with musicians and the concept of 'virtuosity' and asks the question 'Are we aiming high enough as surgeons?'
The second box explores the 'head of the surgeon'- the 'What' of surgery. How the surgeon organises their surgery influencing the movements seen in Box 1. The keystone chapter in this section is based on Toyota car manufacturing and the application of 'Lean' processes to surgery, again, with exercises to try at the end of the chapter. Barriers to the application of lean are explored and include the concept of locus of control and failure. Failure is explored through the ages, and it is argued there has never been a worse time in history to fail. Box 3 is the 'theatre the surgeon is sitting in', the air they breathe. The key chapters in this box explore heuristics, problem solving theory, and personality.
