After more than a decade in the United States and Canada, I returned to Korea expecting its language to feel like home. The words were familiar. The meanings beneath them often weren't.
Why does a new acquaintance ask your age so quickly? Can "I'm fine" mean no-or leave the other person unsure? When does a company dinner feel optional in name only? And why might someone you barely know ask about your marriage or family?
In these personal essays, I explore the small moments that reveal the expectations woven into everyday Korean life: a meal offered with care, a conversation shaped by age and respect, a question at work that feels harder to ask than it should, or a polite answer that doesn't quite say what I mean.
Moving between Korea and North America gave me a different way to notice these moments. It did not make me an expert on how all Koreans think. It made me curious about how people express care, navigate relationships, and decide what belongs in a conversation.
Korea, Seen Anew is an inviting introduction to everyday Korean culture through one returnee's experience-for readers curious about Korea, and for anyone who has ever found the familiar unexpectedly unfamiliar.
