L'Orient grec et l'Occident latin

Ce troisième volume de la série " L'Église dans l'histoire " retrace l'avènement de l'Église depuis la fin du VIe concile œcuménique (681) jusqu'à la bataille de Manzikert (1071). Bien que, à cette époque, l'" Orient grec " et l'" Occident latin " deviennent des entités distinctes, l'auteur les analyse en parallèle, observant leurs points de convergence et de conflit et notant les évolutions à l'intérieur de l'Église tout entière, plutôt que d'offrir une explication simpliste du schisme qui allait diviser la chrétienté. Couvrant des événements qui sont, pour certains, spécifiques à chaque partie –; la controverse iconoclaste en Orient et l'essor de l'Empire carolingien en Occident –;, ou partagés pour d'autres –; la réforme monastique, la renaissance et la mission –;, l'auteur dresse un portrait de deux civilisations chrétiennes qui, en dépit de leurs points communs, sombrent de plus en plus dans une incompréhension mutuelle. Malgré de curieux synchronismes entre l'Orient et l'Occident, le père Louth montre comment deux chemins ont divergé d'une route autrefois commune et comment l'orthodoxie byzantine a défini l'Orient grec par rapport à l'Occident latin en termes théologiques, religieux, culturels et politiques. -- This third volume in the series 'L'Église dans l'histoire' retraces the advent of the Church from the end of the Sixth Ecumenical Council (681) to the battle of Manzikert (1071). Although, during this period, the 'Greek East' and 'Latin West' became distinct entities, the author analyses them in parallel, observing where they converged or conflicted and noting the developments within the Church as a whole, rather than offering a simplistic explanation of the schism that would end up dividing Christianity. Covering events that are, in some cases, specific to each part - the iconoclastic controversy in the East and the rapid expansion of the Carolingian Empire in the West - or common to both, such as the reform of the monasteries, revival and mission, the author paints a portrait of two Christian civilisations which, in spite of the things they shared, sank deeper and deeper into mutual incomprehension. Father Louth demonstrates how, despite some curious synchronisms between East and West, two paths diverged from what was once a common route, and how Byzantine Orthodoxy defined the Greek East in relation to the Latin West in theological, religious, cultural and political terms.
