This book presents a PhD thesis about how people develop attachments to places and what this means for natural resource management. It discusses the concept of "sense of place" which has much to offer in the domain of natural resource management in terms of integrating social, economic and ecological dimensions of environment. Drawing on a detailed study of how different people relate to their environments in north Queensland, Australia, the book identifies key influences on sense of place and how these translate into practice. Above all, the book describes how we learn about our environments, the importance of experiential learning in childhood and ways to foster learning about our environments in adult life.
