One man gave up a crown he already held, setting a newborn baby in the king's own seat and telling Sparta, "Here is your king." Another turned down a crown he never wanted, then accepted it to go tame the roughest city in Italy. Two men, two cities, and one question between them: what kind of rules make a good city?

Your child won't get a tour of ancient Greece and Rome so much as a front-row seat to two opposite bets on how you hold a society together. Lycurgus tried to make every Spartan the same so the rules would stick on their own. Numa left every Roman free and gambled that goodness could hold a city together without force. Your child watches both experiments run and starts forming an opinion about which bet they would make.

The specifics are the kind kids repeat at dinner. When an enemy sent Sparta a long threat that ended with a promise to burn the city to the ground, the Spartans wrote back a single word: "If." And when a shield fell from the sky over Rome as a gift from the gods, Numa had eleven exact copies forged so no thief could ever pick out the true one, then sent priests dancing all twelve through the streets once a year while all of Rome poured out to watch.

Most retellings stop when the two life stories end. This one keeps going into the chapters Plutarch actually wrote the pair for, where he sets the two men side by side and weighs what each city gained against what it paid. It also keeps his honesty about sources: when a beloved story about Numa's famous teacher did not fit the dates, Plutarch said so, and your child gets to watch him check.

What This Version Does

At this reading level, your child follows two complete lives and then does the harder thing: reads the comparison Plutarch himself wrote and watches a two-thousand-year-old writer lay both lives on the scale, never pretending a triumph erased its cost, reasoning his way toward a judgment instead of just announcing one. Holding two good answers up against each other is exactly the muscle this reading level is built to stretch.

Ages 6 to 10 · 76 pages · about 7,600 words · Flesch-Kincaid grade 5.4 (lifted by the ancient names) · 19 black-and-white vintage line illustrations · independent and guided reading.

A note for parents. Real history with its hard edges named, not dramatized. Spartan children are trained to bear hunger and cold; at the end of his life Lycurgus, far from home, quietly stops eating and chooses to die so that Sparta can never be released from its oath to keep his laws; Sparta's eventual fall is told plainly; and Rome goes back to war the day Numa's long peace ends. Nothing is graphic, and the honesty is what makes the comparison land.

Part of the nüNERD Learning System. At 6–8, they're reading with growing independence; you're still there for the hard words and the big questions. At 8–10, they're fully solo, and the comparison you planted years ago clicks into place. Every Plutarch pair comes at four reading levels, each built for how children actually think at that stage.

Also available for Ages 0–4 (A Plutarch Toddler Book), Ages 3–7 (A Plutarch Picture Book), and Ages 10–14 (A Plutarch Prep Book).
