Madad is the cry for grace in the Sufi circle, the word sung out when the heart asks to be carried.
This book gathers forty-nine poems of longing, wine, surrender, healing, the self, union and transformation, from the great Sufi masters Ibn al-Farid, Rabi'a al-'Adawiyya, al-Hallaj, Ibn Arabi and Abu Madyan, and from the songs of Egypt's Sufi singers, to the mystics and poets of the West: Rilke, Hadewijch, Blake, Dickinson, Goethe and Dante.
Each poem appears in Arabic and English, set opposite an etched and watercoloured plate showing the verse alive in our own time: on a night bus, in a laundromat, at a window, in a departure lounge.
Seven chapters follow the seven planets, from the Moon to the Sun, and each closes with a pause for the hidden sciences: the reading of dreams, sacred listening, the stations of the soul, al-Hallaj's Book of Hidden Letters, the magic square, the perfect human and the ouroboros.
A book to open at any page, and to carry along the road.
