Hi, I am a kampung boy. The term "kampung" in Bahasa Malaysia means "village". I often introduce myself in this manner as I was raised in a small town called Bidor, which is quite distant from the bustling metropolitan city of Kuala Lumpur. When I mention that I grew up in Bidor, I find that even many residents of Kuala Lumpur (KL) are unfamiliar with it.
I hope your arrival in Malaysia is not merely as a tourist with a singular destination, but rather as an individual equipped with a map filled with inquiries and a heart yearning to connect. The effects of jet lag dissipated in a coffee shop located near the airport, where the barista communicated in a warm mixture of Bahasa Malaysia and English, and the smiles of strangers reminded me that hospitality transcends borders, even when one is uncertain of their location in the world.
What brings you here is not defined by a singular moment or reason. It is a constellation of daily realities-the warmth that permeates conversations as they transition from discussions about the weather to family, food, and the small rituals that characterize daily existence. In Bidor, I discovered how the community congregates at the kopitiam at dawn, the flavor of roti canai cooling on a plate, and the consistent rhythm of tai chi practiced in the morning market. In Malaysia, these rhythms are omnipresent: a market evolving into a family gathering, children frolicking in open fields, and a neighbor inviting you to partake in a plate of home-cooked meals.
