When life becomes bitter
In life, there are times when everything changes. A departure we didn't see coming. A promise that crumbles. A silence that replaces a beloved voice. These moments leave a bitter taste within us, a wound that doesn't always heal on its own.
The Bible gives this experience a name: Mara. This Hebrew word literally means "bitter." It doesn't express a simple passing sadness, but a pain so profound that it seems to have invaded everything.
This is the cry of Naomi when she returns to Bethlehem, a widow, without her sons, her heart in tatters. She then says to those who welcome her:
"Do not call me Naomi (that is, gentleness), call me Mara, for the Almighty has filled me with bitterness. I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty." (Ruth 1:20-21)
