Tom and Briony are a young couple in their prime, living in Bristol, England. Tom is sporty and career driven. Briony is a soul-seeking teacher with a yearning to see the Northern Lights. But there's never any time for anything - until Tom gets very ill.

When Tom slides rapidly from vibrant health into a state of severe disease, life changes completely. With the help of their friends, they take off for a tour of Europe in a converted horsebox, starting in Paris and journeying through France, before culminating, they hope, with going north in the winter to see The Lights. For a while, they become explorers of lost places and make a life that is worth living.

Not only does Briony succeed in overcoming some very dark moments and learn to face the future, she makes a decision of magnitude to take a bold and surprising new direction. In loss, she finds that she is capable of far more than she ever imagined possible, as she examines the human's right to decide its own fate.
