At the close of the 19th century in St. Petersburg, Russia, two gentlemen vie for the affections of a young lady. After marrying one of them, she and her new husband invite the other man to join them on their honeymoon in Italy. Writing during the Silver Age of Russian literature at the turn of the 20th century, Zinaida Gippius used her fiction to explore polyamory, gender, and "Neo-Christian" philosophy, and put her ideas into practice by living as a throuple with two husbands. The Silver Age came to an abrupt end when the Bolshevik Revolution succeeded and the writers of the movement scattered to Western Europe, and it was largely forgotten among scholars of Russian literature. With the emergence in American culture of an increased acceptance of nonmonogamy coinciding with a resurgence of religiosity among Christians, Gippius's exploration of these themes over a century ago deserves renewed attention.
